Investment Activities

Much of the investment activity of years past is in the oil and gas industry. Although we strive for diversification for our current investments, our decision making process does not exclude investments based on industry. Rather, we decide on an investment after considering a variety of characteristics. Ultimately, if the investment is right, we will pursue it.

Investment activities include wholly-owned and collaborative arrangements. There are many benefits that a partner can reap due to the special status of an Indian tribe. For example, the Southern Ute Indian Tribe is not subject to Federal income tax. Our operations in coal-bed methane produce Federal income tax credits that are not useful to us, but are valuable to our partners. The same is true of real estate depreciation and various associated tax credits. As another example, our sovereign status allows us to issue municipal bonds to finance qualifying projects. Thus we are able to obtain lower cost financing. We are also able to qualify for various corporate and governmental programs that represent a potential advantage to us and to our partners. The Growth Fund operates with central investment that is supported by an outstanding investment research team, but each of its various operating subsidiaries also aggressively pursues investment opportunities within their respective industries. The central research function is expected to identify major new areas of interest and develop plans for pursuing them, as well as providing support for mergers and acquisitions and other investment activities.
